My everything scarf

About 4 years ago I took a trip to NYC with erica and mandy. On our last day there we popped into a department store near union station. I have absolutely no clue where the store is exactly, other than the union station pat, or what it’s name is. We goofed off and tried on hats. We took pictures and giggled. On the way out I spotted a scarf that I had to have but debated about greatly. I’d already bought 3 or 4 scarves from street vendors that I loved but this one was different. It’s brightly colored in yellows blues greens browns reds orange etc. Has an amazing patteren. It’s so totally me. It cost 3 times the amount a street vendor scarf cost but I didn’t care in the end. I use this scarf every day. It’s my train pillow, my office blanket, my meeting wrap, and a lovely scarf during the in between weather that should last from now until June, when Chicago skips right past spring, go without collecting $200, and right to a swealtering sweaty jail called summer. And then my scarf will be my train blanket when metra decides meat locker is an acceptable temperature.

Anyhow. I get jaded sometimes at how much I love and use this scarf. It would be one of those items on a can’t live without list. I truley love it. One of the best buys I’ve ever made at a whopping $15.

So today at lunch I was paying for my sandwhich when the darling bubbly gal behind the counter asked where I got my scarf. She just loves it! And I kindly said New York. She looked confused and I replied again with New York at some store near union station. She was bummed and I was bummed for her. Man was she going to miss out.

And she made me realize how great this darn scarf is!! It’s just a piece of material but it’s a damn great piece! And every so often I can look at it and a rush of NYC memories comes back.

Sigh.

When Clarity came out

A couple weeks ago I went to the jimmy eat world clarity 10 x tour show with erica and dj. Ryan met us there and our little group had a great time. The show was like no other I’ve ever been to. They played clarity from start to finish and came back on to play a few newer songs. They sounded great and it was just too much fun. I’m so glad I was able to experience the show.

While we were walking out there was a very young girl waiting with her dad. I asked if she liked the show. She did. I asked her how old she was. 10. She was just a little baby when clarity came out.

That little girl made me think about where I was 10 years ago… What I was doing.

18. Senior in high school. Dating bob. Blue stripped hair. Oldsmobile cutless sierra… Blue. Dennys. Starbucks. Off the alley. Fireside bowl. Al’s diner. Waitress. Tuesday dinner with erica dj jamie chris and bob. Afternoon art class block. Art shows. Getting into Columbia. Summer school. Nicole hack. Beth S. 007 nintendo 64. Crumb. The end of blueberry bagles. Ceiling art. Colored bedroom walls. Knocks on my window. A toyota corola waiting for me after work. Knowing the one. Thrift stores. Marcus theater on western. Get up kids. Less than jake. Monday night movies. Red and grey checkered pants held together with safety pins. Mischief. What is drag racing. Wow that’s drag racing. Luke. Far. Bold colored markers. Warm. Holding hand to ‘for me this is heaven’.

On Saturday, Erica, DJ and I are heading to the metro for the Jimmy Eat World Clarity show. Very exciting!

I had a conversation with a friend about this show over the past weekend and he said this is his favorite band, favorite album, ultimate show…

and it got me thinking. What’s my ultimate show?

when the clouds meet the horizon

This morning the sun was barely starting to light the sky and there was an abundance of clouds near horizon level. As I looked out the window of the train, I could imagine for a moment that I was looking at mountains. This doesn’t happen very often but today I felt like I was 8 years old vacationing on the east side of Tennessee with my mom and gramparents. It made me wonder if Illinois is it for us….Will we always be here? The business is here and will move soon, but will we move it again… to a warmer climate where racing can happen year round? Where property is much more affordable than Illinois has to offer? Where a hill is the result of a mountain and I’m a three hour drive from the ocean? Maybe one day, I certainly hope so. Mountains are very lovely first thing in the morning.

little big planet

Bob turned the big 2-8 this past November and what better gift to give him than an over the top, darling as can be, so cute it makes me cry, video game.

Little Big Planet. We threw LBP in that night and I literally cried with laughter, for well over an hour, over the cuteness of this game…and then we didn’t play again until last night (thanks to 346 hours of resitance fall of man 2).

So back to LBP. It’s completely indescribable. But i’ll try. The little guy in the game is called sackboy and he’s the cutest damn thing…looks like my 6 year old cousin mac. seriously. You can change sackboy’s look from sack skin to bunny ears, penguin, chimera, something that looks like a teenage mutant ninja turtle, etc. He makes different faces, hangs his tongue out of his mouth, dances, I love him, I want my very own sackboy. Anyhow, you run sackboy through levels like super mario world, but they have major depth and they require thought and teamwork to get through. you pull and push stuff, carry bombs to blow up stuff, there’s races, and prize bubbles, stickers, the list goes on. the music in the game is so fun and different, too. guh. i love it. it’s so creative and silly and my new favorite way to waste the day away. if you have the means check it out.

today at bunco I learned

1. almost all my neighbor ladies are teachers or teacher’s aids. 2 teach special needs children (bless them), 1 is a dept chair, and they all think i am a teacher. which leads to “oh. why does the american bar association need a graphic designer” and “you work how far away” or my favorite “what’s a graphic designer…sounds interesting…so (insert name here and look away from me) I almost called you yesterday for a play date with (insert kids name here)
2. all my neighbor ladies are moms. i’m the only 1 that’s not squeezed a baby out my vag. I also have no reason to be tired at 11 pm because i don’t have kids draining my energy and hanging on my limbs.
3. 11 pm is way past my bed time and since i missed it i am now wired
4. there is a white pick-up truck in the neighborhood between 10-11 pm suspected of making drug deals…apparently i can see him from my loft. i’ll be on the lookout
5. my neighbors husband pooped his pants last time he had the flu. laughter ensues.

also noted. bunco rules … BYO drink. i brought my delicious warm chai tea and finished it up by round 2. by the end of round 3 i’m thirsty and all that’s offered is sprite and it’s gross. sweet, but salty, and thick. my teeth felt gross after my first sip. and the aftertaste (shiver). 1 month no pop and i’m disgusted with it. I did notice throughout the month there were a few times where I craved a coke a simply desired a glass while eating pizza. Let’s see how February goes.
